Water with sugar. 4 ice cream bars. 2 fruit juices. And a lollypop.

The items listed above are what I witnessed someone eat in ONE day. And not just anybody… a 4 year old little girl!

Over the summer I was au pairing in Italy, living with a family and witnessing their day to day life. I couldn’t help but take notice of the amount of sugar this little girl consumed… not to mention the massive mood swings associated with the sugar highs and lows she was experiencing.

Sugar may be a sweet and enjoyable treat, but there are absolutely terrifying consequences of consuming too much of the stuff (which most people do)!

The scary truth is that sugar is hiding out in most of your food. It’s not just the teaspoon (or two) of sugar you dump into your morning coffee that is the problem. It’s the other 20 teaspoons that are lurking in your daily diet that are wrecking your health and causing a slew of unpleasant symptoms. From that protein bar you grab running out the door in the morning to the “healthy” salad covered in dressing – SUGAR IS EVERYWHERE!

FACT: The average American consumes 152 pounds of sugar per year – which is roughly 22 teaspoons PER DAY! Yikes!

So, what is so bad about SUGAR? Let’s take a look…

Sugar (refined: the most common form) is linked to:

Insomnia Obesity ADHD
Allergies Cardiovascular Disease Hair Loss
Dizziness Cancer Skin Irritation
Type 2 Diabetes Manic Depression Metabolic Disorder

If you want to feel great and abundantly healthy, it is time for you to STEP AWAY from the sugar. Because sugar is an addictive substance, it is necessary to detox your body and reset your system to function without sugar’s disruptive effects.

Start with these 5 ideas and embark on an initial 10 day journey to rid your body of sugar – and alleviate the awful symptoms mentioned above. You may experience some withdrawal symptoms the first few days such as headaches and fatigue. After the initial detox though, your body will “bounce back” and you will start to feel vibrant, energetic and happy!

1. Go “Cold Turkey”: Because there is sugar hiding everywhere, it is best to avoid packaged food and drinks (aside from water). Stick to eating fresh foods such as vegetables and lean meats. The addictive nature of sugar makes it EXTREMELY difficult to have “just a little.” Your body will crave more and more and more sugar if you simply try to cut back.

2. Be Prepared: There is a saying that goes, “when you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Stock up on healthy and portable snacks so that you don’t find yourself face to face at a vending machine loaded with sugary snacks. Plan ahead and make sure to bring along some healthy snack options such as nuts, natural canned fish (tuna, salmon, sardines), or sliced veggies.

3. Eat FAT: Healthy fats are excellent at balancing your blood sugar and making you feel full. Add some healthy fat in at every meal to stifle sugar cravings. Choose coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil, avocado and nuts and seeds.

4. Get Quality SLEEP: When you don’t get adequate rest your body searches for energy… which can cause you to reach for sugar that will give you an instant boost. Depriving yourself of sleep also causes your hunger hormones to rise and your appetite-suppressing hormones to fall, which leads to sugar cravings. Give your body enough sleep – especially while detoxing so that it has enough energy to repair your system!

5. Manage Stress: It’s no secret that stress creates many problems for your body and mind. When you are stressed, your body releases cortisol, which makes you hungry! Evaluate your stress and take action in handling it (versus avoiding the problem). Take deep breaths, exercise and rest when necessary.

BUT WAIT WAIT WAIT! Is there something I can use instead of sugar? How am I supposed to drink my morning coffee?

The good news is is that yes, you do have options.

There are a variety of sugar alternatives available on the market! However, the only one I would recommend using is PURE stevia. Unlike other sugar alternatives, stevia doesn’t mess with your blood sugar – but it can still continue to feed your desire for sweet stuff. If you find this to be the case, then it may be best for you to go “cold turkey.”

Stevia has been growing in popularity and imposter products have made their ways to the shelf. CHECK the label for ingredients to ensure that what you are purchasing is pure stevia. I find that pure liquid stevia that comes in a dropper bottle is the most convenient to use.

It should be noted that everything should be consumed in moderation – and stevia, although natural – is no different. Too much can cause problems so keep your consumption to a minimum. It’s 30 times sweeter than sugar so a little goes a long way.
